Chapter 5

“Fucking wake up, you stubborn motherfucker!”

He put his hands around his man’s neck and violently shook the inert body lying under him. Liquid gold hair caressed the tips of his trembling fingers, and he caught them in a fist. He stopped and stared, willing Kraken to move, to order him around as if he expected everybody to bend to his will. High-handed and so protective, he smothered Kanael at times. The stubborn ass remained unmoving, not a wisp of hope for him to cling to. He wasn’t breathing, was not moving, and his usual high-running temperature was now cold as ice. By anybody’s standards Kraken was dead.

Only Kanael wasn’t anybody. He refused to give up. He was living proof that Kraken must be still alive somewhere in there. As both of them were Originals, and still kinda mated to each other, one of them could not die. They needed to die together for them do be dead for good. Kraken was not dead, and Kanael was not planning to let it happen anytime soon.

He climbed out of the bed, feeling slightly dizzy and more than a bit sick to his stomach. In a corner of the room, a bar gleamed in the low light, several empty bottles scattered on the polished wood surface. The omelet he had prepared earlier sat behind it, on the kitchen table. One would have expected an Original his age to be immune to petty things like having a hangover or getting drunk for that matter. Nah, though he had needed to drink slightly more than a human. Three bottles of vodka, one of tequila, and a good ol’ whisky had solved that problem last night. Maybe there had been some wine also. He didn’t remember a lot after a point. Kanael was different from shifters in that aspect. His body was almost human at first glance and biologically average. He looked down at his naked self and flushed, happy that he wasn’t sharing the cabin with any of the other wolves. They had insisted on it for security reasons, but they were young and stupid and obviously didn’t know who they were talking with. The alpha had subsided to just posting a patrol around the cabin after a small show of power. Kanael was the one they should fear, not anyone daring to threaten him and his own. He had reached the end of his patience. The limit of his endurance. He needed Kraken to wake up as he was terrified of what he would do otherwise. He never used his gifts in their entirety for a reason. He could destroy all of them while trying to save them. And he had wolves all around him that would resent having their lives cut short because they had offered a hand and tried to help a stranger in need. Kanael had
